We are also thrilled to report that in a recent indoor tournament, Winter Magic (Kansas City), every girl who attended the Inside the 18 Training Series scored at least one goal – and the goalkeepers made some phenomenal saves! They had a huge impact on their teams reaching the Championship match, one even took home the gold! Congrats ladies!

Our camps and clinics offer specialized training for goalkeepers and field players, and at the end of each session, we integrate the groups for live, applied training. It’s a fun way to learn new skills and stay sharp in a small group training environment. We keep the groups small so you get lots of development and coaching opportunities. The downside of that is our camps and clinics fill up fast, so make sure to register before it’s too late!

We also offer private (one-on-one) soccer training sessions year round for goalkeepers and field players, including specialty clinics for goal scorers.

I’m excited to announce that Finesse Soccer will be offering a Prep Camp to get you ready for the high school season. A weekly series of training sessions for field players and goalkeepers, in a fast-paced environment that will get you ready for tryouts and the season. Both coaches consistently started Varsity, Freshman-Senior year. We know what it takes to succeed at the high school level, and beyond.

In this series of 6 training sessions, goal scorers work with myself (Coach Robinson) while Goalkeepers work with Laura Boyer in a unique and effective training format.

Each session lasts 90 minutes, with the first 60 minutes dedicated to positional training (goalies train with Laura, goal scorers work with Carrie), and the last 30 minutes the two groups battle head to head as each side receives game-like training experience Inside the 18. It’s a fast and furious pace, what every goalie and goal scorer dreams of. Read more about our personal training for goalies and goal scorers here.

A great soccer opportunity this summer in Kansas City is training with Coach Carrie Fry, either individually or in small groups.

Depending on the stage of the players “career”, wins and losses should not be the only metric by which you evaluate the past year of soccer. For younger kids, I cannot stress enough that it’s not about wins and losses, it’s about how far they have come as individual players and as a team. For older players in high school with the hopes of earning a college soccer scholarship, more emphasis should be placed on wins and losses, as that is how good teams are identified and scouted by college scouts.

For now, here are some questions to ask yourself (and your soccer player), focusing on pre-high school players (youth players):

1) Did your child have fun? Was the coach positive, focusing on the good rather than the bad?

2) Did you child improve continually from the beginning of the season? Did the team get better, start playing more like a team?

3) Does your child have a well rounded set of skills, for instance on offense, are they equally balanced between dribbling and passing? Or can they only dribble? Only pass?

4) Does your child like their coach? Trust them? Would you be comfortable if your child saw their coach as their role model?

5) Does the coach relate to the players, or does he/she treat them the same regardless of age or sensitivity?

6) Does the coach bark commands during the game (now pass to Shelly, now dribble, now pass to Steph, now Jenny make a run…) or does he/she let the players make decisions on their own? (Hint: the former is not ideal, as the players will never learn how to play soccer without following commands. If your child is in that kind of a playing environment, run!!)

I hope you can use the above questions to form your own opinion about if your child is in a good environment for their development. Of course, there are may other things to consider. This is just a starting point.

If your child is working in a small group or private coaching situation, it’s important to ask these questions as well. Soccer should be fun and challenging at the same time. Your child should want to go to practice. And chances are, if they want to be there, they’ll learn a thing or two along the way.
